Art as activism
We take a creative approach in everything we do, but some projects have allowed the space to explore artistic communication more fully.
Our artistic history and creative ambassadors
The Vavengers began as an arts collective, bringing together artists, activists and survivors to unite against Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and other forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). We started with events, creating open spaces where art and creative expression could engage and educate people on VAWG and spark conversations and action from survivors and non-survivors alike.
These successful events shaped who we are today. Five years after our first event we became an official charity, a step we took so we could further support the grassroots work already happening and ensure our rich network of survivors’ voices could be heard. Over the years we have built a strong community of artists – visual artists, musicians, poets – who use their craft to tell stories of women, girls and inequality, their works exuding both reality and hope.
So much remains from this creative beginning, but most importantly our understanding of the power that art has to engage people with stories that might otherwise feel too private or distant from our everyday lives.
Thank you to all the artists that have supported us in our work and continue to raise awareness of VAWG. We will continue to do so and hope you do too.
