Third prosecution in England and Wales on FGM/C secured; first prosecution on conspiracy

The third prosecution ever on FGM/C in England and Wales has been secured today with sentencing taking place in Midlands, England led by Janine McKinney, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East Midlands. Emad Kaky was convicted on 9 September 2024 after a ten-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court and was today sentenced to four and a half years’ imprisonment.

Kaky has been jailed for conspiring to commit Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and forced marriage against a young girl in the first conviction of its kind in England and Wales. This is also the first male conviction on FGM/C which makes it a landmark case. Kaky arranged for the child to be trafficked from the UK to Iraq where he had organised for her to be subjected to FGM/C and forced into marriage. Before the crimes could be carried out, Kaky’s plans were uncovered by a witness who arranged for the child to come back to the UK and reported Kaky to the police.

Kaky was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit FGM/C and forced marriage, which he denied and later admitted that he considered these forms of abuse ‘normal’ however with substantial evidence the conviction was secured. He was convicted at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced today.
