Raneem’s Law: Combating Domestic Abuse Against Women and Girls

The Home Secretary has introduced Raneem's Law, a new legislation initiated and advocated by Nour Norris, the aunt and sister of the late Raneem Oudeh and Khaola Saleem. Raneem Oudeh and Khaola Saleem were murdered by Raneem's ex-husband in 2018, and Norris has been seeking justice for her family, advocating to protect survivors of domestic abuse and prevent domestic abuse with this new law.

"This will form part of ‘Raneem’s Law’, in memory of Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem, who were murdered by Raneem’s ex-husband in 2018. There were 13 reports made to the police about concerns for Raneem’s safety, with no arrests made. On the night she was killed, she rang 999 four times."

Raneem Law has introduced new specific measures to strengthen the efforts of police to protect women and girls from domestic abuse including implementing specialists in 999 control rooms and targeting police forces.  The government is introducing Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs) to keep women and girls safe from domestic abusers.

"The new orders will go further, with measures such as making it a legal requirement for perpetrators to inform the police of any change in name or address, imposing electronic tagging, and ordering assessments for behavior change programs. There will also be no maximum duration for these orders. The orders will cover all forms of domestic abuse, including violence, stalking, and controlling behaviour, and more agencies will be able to apply for them – not just the police and criminal courts but also family and civil courts, and third parties such as local authorities, charities, and social services, with survivors also able to apply directly for the order themselves."

We are very happy that not only has this law been introduced but also has shed light on the passive and little attention domestic violence cases in homes to women and girls are given and needs to be changed!
